RECAP: CLE/AKR | Building Tour Akron Children's Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit

Our Cleveland Akron City Center was proud to host our second building tour of 2026 with an inside look at the new Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit at Akron Children’s Hospital, welcoming members and guests for an engaging exploration of this thoughtfully designed healthcare environment focused on safety, dignity, and healing for young patients and their families.

Currently under construction and slated to open later this summer, the unit reflects a highly collaborative effort between Akron Children’s Hospital, CannonDesign | +Detail , Summit Construction, and the broader consultant team. Attendees gained valuable insight into the complexities and opportunities involved in designing behavioral health environments for pediatric patients, where every detail must balance clinical requirements, patient wellbeing, staff safety, and emotional comfort.

Throughout the tour, discussions centered around how the built environment can positively influence mental and behavioral healthcare experiences. The design prioritizes calming, supportive spaces that reduce stress and overstimulation while fostering connection, privacy, and security. Natural light, carefully selected materials, warm finishes, and thoughtful color application contribute to an atmosphere that feels welcoming rather than institutional.

Attendees also explored how safety and durability were seamlessly integrated into the design without compromising aesthetics. From ligature-resistant detailing and behavioral health-specific furnishings to clear sightlines and intuitive staff support spaces, the project demonstrates how intentional interior design can directly support patient outcomes and caregiver wellbeing alike. The tour highlighted the importance of creating environments that respect the dignity of young patients while supporting families and care teams through challenging moments.

A huge thank you to Akron Children’s Hospital for generously opening your doors and sharing this important project with our members, as well as CannonDesign | +Detail and Summit Construction for providing such a thoughtful and informative tour experience. We are also grateful to our sponsors for their continued support of our programming. We look forward to continuing to showcase impactful projects throughout our City Center this year.
